5 tips for looking stylish on a student budget

#1 //

Set a clothing budget for yourself so you don’t overspend. Before you go shopping take your credit card out of your wallet so you can only pay with debit or only bring one credit card if you own two. This will assist with the in-store temptation of wanting everything you see.

Overall, you should budget in general. Setting up a savings system that has rewards can be beneficial. For example, save for two months and then treat yourself to a shopping spree the third month. I’m not a finance expert and there are a lot of expenses as a student (I’m experiencing them right now) so, here is a link that is focused on helping students with budgeting their moneyI also discovered a contest on the site and it never hurts to enter so here’s the link

Invest your money in basic pieces rather than trendy items. Some basic pieces to invest in are a great fitting pair of jeans, plain white tee, plain black tee, comfy solid black leggings and a slim fit black pair of pants (similar to leggings in fit but, made out of a thicker material). When you purchase great quality clothing you won't have to waste money continually replacing this basic item because they have become worn over time.

When buying trendy items and accessories go to stores like Forever 21 and H&M. They have mass quantities of product and are constantly bringing in new clothes every week. These stores keep up with trends so, they will always have what’s new at a lower price.

Layering and accessorising are two of the most important style tips I can recommend. Adding accessories or having multiple layers can give an outfit different elements of interest. You can re-wear layers and make different combinations using your basic wardrobe pieces. Therefore, you can spend less and save more, helping out your budget.

#5 //

(only) Shop sale and clearance items. Clearance racks can sometimes get a bad rap for having old, dirty clothes on them. However, in reality, they are just items that have been marked down because they are “out of season” and the store needs to get rid of them. Now when something is “out of season” that doesn’t mean out of season for you. Stores can give us trends to follow but, you have full authority on when you’re going to wear an item. One big tip for shopping clearance racks because they tend to be messy is, to have patience because you can find hidden gems at fantastic prices.

Bonus //

Shop online for exclusive sales, coupons and cash back opportunities. Websites like Retail Me Not and Ebates are a great place to start looking.
