#GirlBoss Guide | Gracie Carroll

I interviewed Toronto Blogger and Entrepreneur Gracie Carroll about how she started her blog and The Chic Canuck!

1. Where are you from? And where do you currently reside?

I’m from downtown Toronto and I currently reside in downtown Toronto! Although I grew up on the west and now live on the east side of town.

2. What did you study in school? Did you ever see it leading to what you are doing today?

I went to Ryerson University for the Fashion Communication program. Ten years ago I don’t think I ever thought that what I do today could be a job or career, but the skills I gained during those four years have definitely helped me in what I do now every day.

3. What jobs did you have before you started Gracie Carroll / The Chic Canuck?

I moved to New York City to intern for Teen Vogue after my third year of university, and then I moved to London, UK after I graduated. While in London I worked in PR before landing my dream job assisting the Fashion Features Director at ELLE UK! When I moved back home I worked for a friend’s start-up which taught me a lot about building a successful business from scratch.

4. Why did you decide to create / The Chic Canuck?

While working in the UK in PR and later at ELLE UK so much of my time was dedicated to researching and contacting bloggers that I started to realize just how massive and important these personal sites and brands were becoming. As I knew I was going to be returning home to Toronto when my visa ended, I thought there was a real and very exciting opportunity to create my own blog and be a part of a growing business that I knew would soon hit Canada. A few months after moving home I launched in October of 2011 and the rest is history!

I decided to create after meeting and working with so many great local Canadian brands and designers. I felt strongly that there should be one place online where people can go to shop and discover things, people and places that are chic and Canadian. People often tell me that they find it hard to shop or support local, so the hope is that The Chic Canuck can help them make smarter decisions about how they spend their money.

5. What was your dream job growing up?

I wanted to work for a fashion magazine.

6. Where are your favourite places to shop?

I love shopping at local boutiques along Queen West in Toronto, as well as shopping directly from some of my favourite local designers such as Andrew Coimbra, Paria Shirvani, Bazzul, Beaufille and Sid Neigum. I also love to shop when I’m travelling to bring home something special that’s local to that city or country.

7. How would you define the word success?

That is tough! There are so many ways to define success. To me, I think that if you can build or create something that you can turn into your job and be able to work for yourself, that is success. But really, as long as you are happy you are successful!

8. What do you see yourself doing in the next five years?

Whatever makes me happy!

9. Is there anyone who has been influential in your life/starting a blog and business?

My mom has run her own business (a womenswear boutique) for over thirty years and she’s always been my biggest inspiration especially as an entrepreneur.

10. Have you ever had a mentor who has given you advice that you would like to share?

I think the best advice I’ve ever received has come from observing my mentors. These women showed me that you don’t have to be a bitch to be successful and to me that has always been very powerful.

11. How do you stay up to date on current trends?

The internet! And people watching.

12. What advice would you like to give to today’s women?

Work hard, be kind, help others.

13. What is a fact about you that would surprise others?

I could be a professional bargain hunter. l am extremely good at finding great deals on pretty much anything.

14. Where can everyone find you:
