#GirlBoss Guide | Brittani Buettner

I interviewed Brittani Founder of Scenic Route Collection who makes beautiful handmade jewellry inspired by nature!

1. Where are you from? And where do you currently reside?

Hello! I was born and raised in Kelowna, BC Canada. When I was 18 I went travelling which coincidentally gave me the wanderlust bug. However, I am now happily living in Whistler, Canada.

2. What did you study in school? Did you ever see it leading to what you are doing today?

Coming out of high school, I had no plans of attending post-secondary education until I found something I was passionate about and wouldn’t regret pursuing. So finally, four years after high school I went back to school at Kootenay Studio Arts in Nelson, BC to get a Jewellery Certificate because I wanted to gain the necessary skills which could bring my designs and dreams into reality.

3. What jobs did you have before you started Scenic Route Collection?

All of my previous jobs have been customer service related, including being a barista and room attendant at a hotel. I currently work at Starbucks part time and work on Scenic Route Collection whenever I can. I have started this business from nothing so having another job is important, but I anticipate being full-time with SRC by the fall!

4. Why did you decide to start Scenic Route Collection?

Scenic Route Collection started as a collection of my crocheting, sewing and bookbinding hobbies. When I rebranded SRC strictly as a handmade jewellery business I kept the old name because I believe it fits well with my current mission. All of my work revolves around the theme of nature and adventure which is exactly what taking the scenic route is all about!

5. What was your dream job growing up?

I recently came across some of my kindergarten journals and apparently I wanted to be a Fire Fighter when I grew up! Aside from that I remember really wanting to be a professional dancer and mother.

6. Where are your favourite places to shop?

Since starting this entrepreneurial journey, spending money has been very limited and saved for my business. But when I have some extra cash I like to shop at Lush, local flower shops, Aerie, farmer’s markets and David’s Tea.

7. How would you define the word success?

To me, success is not about monetary gain. It is about accomplishing goals and gaining raving fans while staying true to your core values. Based on that definition, I believe I’m on my way to success. I have come so far in such a short while and I am proud of it! Of course, moments of self-doubt creep in, but I just remind myself of these affirmations to get me through tough times

8. What do you see yourself doing in the next five years?

In five years I see my husband and I finally settled in a home of our own where I will have a dedicated studio of my own to work from. I really believe in my jewellery brand and am excited to see where I am at in 5 years!

9. Is there anyone who has been influential in your life/starting a business?

I didn’t know this at the time, but I have my mother to thank for sparking the entrepreneurial spirit in me! She became a hair stylist right out of high school, and after working in different salons for multiple years, she finally opened her own in our house. Walking through what I’m doing right now, I can’t image how hard it was as mom of two!

10. Have you ever had a mentor who has given you advice that you would like to share?

I have never had an official mentor but many women in my life have given me helpful advice over the years. I surround myself with people who lead by example and I take what I can from that and apply it. Although not direct advice the following quote is a very good reminder.
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” –Theodore Roosevelt

11. What advice would you like to give to today’s women?

Take risks and step outside your comfort zone because you’ll never know what the answer will be until you ask.

12. What is a fact about you that would surprise others?

I once was the lead actress in a Christmas musical! It was fun but I still can’t work up the courage to watch the videos that are buried deep on my Facebook…
