#GirlBoss Guide | Dani D'Silvez

I recently interviewed Dani D'Silvez Founder of Leafeco, a Zero Waste Company! If you're looking to become a Zero Waster or are interested in the subject check out her site here and to learn more about her keep reading!

Where are you from? And where do you currently reside?
I'm from the UK and currently living in a small city called Cheshire.

What did you study in school?
Did you ever see it leading to what you are doing today? I actually studied Music performance and spent a couple of years working in the Music Industry. So I would have never of guessed I would end up running a business dedicated to helping people reduce their household waste.

What jobs did you have before you started Leafeco, Zero Waste for Beginners?
Before Leafeco I had a variety jobs: I was a session singer down in London, then ended up working in a bike shop, a couple of call centres, an underwear factory and in the hospitality industry.

Why did you decide to start Leafeco, Zero Waste for Beginners?
I moved from job to job out of boredom. I was excelling in all I did but something didn't feel right. Deep down I felt empty that I wasn't helping the world become a better place. I had worked for companies that claimed to have a green footprint and sustainable policies but not one of them lived up to their eco name. Every place I worked at I always tried to implement more sustainable practices. But every time I spoke to a manager about my ideas, they all laughed and told me I was only one person and I couldn't make a difference in this world. And that was the birth of Leafeco. I wanted to create a business that encouraged everyone to find ways to live sustainable but without any modern day sacrifice.

What are some quick tips for going zero waste and where can everyone find more?
1. Stop buying single-use plastic bags and keep a reusable bag on you at all times. 2. Always carry a water flask instead of buying a plastic bottled drink 3. Ditch the kitchen towels for cotton cloths that can be thrown into your normal laundry load. For more tips on how to go Zero Waste, visit

Where are your favourite places to shop?
Thrift stores for clothing and tea stores to top up my loose leaf tea addiction. I love supporting local businesses and I buy from a local farmers markets and Etsy buyers whenever I can.

How would you define the word success?
After months and months of working your ass off and a stranger reaches out and tells you how much value they received from your work. And then continuing to carry on that process.

What do you see yourself doing in the next five years?
Working alongside some great people who have the time and resources to make our future sustainable, practical and fun. And I would love to get back to my musical roots and release an album which the profits would be sent to help rebuild deforestation in the Amazon.

Is there anyone who has been influential in your life/starting a business?
I grew up in a small family and travelled around the UK as a kid so I was always the new girl and struggled to make friends. Not one person in my family had their own business so I found inspiration from Elon Musk. His work and dedication to renewable energy inspired me to push through the pain of putting my name out into the world so I could protect the environment and the people in it.

What advice would you like to give to today’s women?
Never compare yourself to someone else. Always focus on you and strive to be a better person than you were yesterday. Learn to let things go quicker and love you for you.

Have you ever had a mentor who has given you advice that you would like to share?
My business buddy is Jennifer Bell from We hold each other accountable for our daily business planning. We check in weekly and talk about our goals and evaluate how our previous week went. She once told me that hard work will always pay off as long as I  keep focused and believe in myself.

What is a fact about you that would surprise others?
I love playing video games! My chill out time is sitting down with my games console and playing a game until I fall asleep.
